How Burglars Actually Get Through Garage Doors—And How to Stop It

Garage doors are one of the easiest entry points into a home, and most break-ins use a handful of predictable tricks. Here's how they work and the hardware and habits that shut them down.

Most garage break-ins don't involve smashing anything. They use the emergency release cord, a pry bar at a weak corner, a cloned remote code, or simply an unlocked door someone left cracked for airflow. Fixing all four takes an afternoon and under $200 in hardware.

The Coat-Hanger Trick

This is the classic: someone slides a stiff wire or a straightened coat hanger through the small gap at the top of the door, hooks the emergency release cord, and pulls. The release disengages the trolley from the opener, and the door lifts by hand in seconds. It works on a huge number of homes because almost every opener comes with that red release handle hanging right there, and older or worn weatherstripping leaves just enough gap at the top to fish through.

The fix is a simple zip-tie trick (loop a zip tie through the release mechanism so it takes a hard pull to release, not a gentle tug) or an inverted-release bracket made for this exact problem. Either one defeats the hanger method without affecting normal manual operation if the power goes out.

Prying at the Bottom Corner

If a door isn't locked - meaning the opener's lock feature isn't engaged and there's no secondary slide lock - a determined person can sometimes pry up a bottom corner enough to trip the sensor or force the track. This is more common on older doors with worn rollers or a track that's already slightly bent, since there's more give to work with. A door in good mechanical shape, locked down, resists this; a sagging or misaligned one doesn't.

Cloned or Grabbed Codes

Openers made years ago often use a fixed code that cheap code-grabbing devices can capture and replay. If your opener is old enough that you don't remember ever syncing a rolling code, this is a real gap. Rolling-code systems generate a new code every time you press the button, so a captured signal is useless on the next try. This is standard on anything made in roughly the last 15 years, but plenty of older openers are still running in garages across the valley.

The Door Nobody Locked

The simplest failure mode is also the most common: the door gets left partway open for ventilation on a cooler evening, or someone forgets to close it after unloading the car, or a remote left in a vehicle gets stolen along with the car's registration, which usually lists the home address. None of that requires any tool or skill at all.

Habits and Hardware That Actually Stop This

  • Zip-tie or bracket the release cord so it can't be hooked and pulled from outside.
  • Upgrade to a rolling-code opener if yours is older and doesn't already have one.
  • Add a slide lock or deadbolt-style garage door lock that engages the track independent of the opener, especially useful if you're away for several days.
  • Keep weatherstripping and the top seal tight - a worn gap is both a dust and bug problem and an easier target for the hanger trick.
  • Treat the interior door between garage and house like a front door: solid core, deadbolt, not just a hollow door with a knob lock.
  • Don't leave remotes in a visible car, and don't leave the door cracked open overnight even just for a few inches of airflow.
  • Add motion-activated lighting at the driveway and garage approach - it removes the cover of darkness that makes all of the above easier to attempt unnoticed.

When to Call Las Vegas Garage Door

If your opener is old enough that you're not sure it has rolling code, or the release cord doesn't have any kind of guard on it, that's a quick fix during a routine visit. We handle Opener Repair & Installation for exactly this kind of upgrade, swapping out legacy units for current rolling-code systems with smartphone lockout features. If a door has already been pried on, forced, or is sagging enough to leave a gap at the bottom corner, our Emergency Garage Door Service gets a tech out to assess and secure it the same day rather than leaving a compromised door overnight.
